Request for Applications Released for 2012 Medicaid Leadership Institute Class
Hamilton, NJ – Applications are being accepted through May 6, 2011, for the third cohort of the Medicaid Leadership Institute, a unique initiative to help Medicaid directors transform their programs into national models for high-quality, cost-effective care. The Medicaid Leadership Institute is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation directed by the Center for Health Care Strategies (CHCS).
Medicaid plays a huge and growing role in the U.S. health care system, particularly given that states are gearing up to implement the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). As a result of the Medicaid coverage expansion set forth by ACA, more than 80 million individuals will be eligible for Medicaid beginning in 2014, dramatically expanding Medicaid’s responsibilities and expenditures. Program costs (state and federal) are projected to exceed $600 billion in 2014, growing to more than $800 billion by 2019. As Medicaid shifts from a welfare program to the nation’s single largest health insurance provider, the demands on the program will increase while the resources to manage it will remain constant or even decrease.
The 12-month Medicaid Leadership Institute is designed to enhance the strategic thinking, substantive knowledge, individual leadership, and technical skills necessary for directors to foster innovation in their state programs and maximize Medicaid’s central role in transforming the nation’s health care system. The curriculum includes in-person meetings, site visits to participant states, individualized leadership coaching, and opportunities to network with leaders from other states and experts in many fields. The program is managed by CHCS and directed by Carolyn Ingram, senior vice president at CHCS and former New Mexico director and Medicaid Leadership Institute Fellow.
“This program offers a truly unique opportunity for Medicaid directors, particularly in the current environment as state leaders contemplate the implications of health reform while balancing difficult fiscal challenges,” said Ms. Ingram. “Our work with the first two classes has been extremely gratifying and we look forward to another strong class next year.”
The first two classes of Fellows included Medicaid directors from Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, and Washington. Together, these states represent approximately 45 percent of the nations Medicaid enrollees and expenditures.
Up to eight Medicaid directors will be competitively selected as Fellows for the third Medicaid Leadership Institute class (August 2011–July 2012). Only current Medicaid directors are eligible to apply. Below are key dates for the application process. For more information please see the Request for Applications.
