Highlights from the Fourth Annual NAMD Boot Camp

Fri, 05/27/2011 The fourth annual NAMD Boot Camp was held in Washington, DC on May, 22, 2011. CHCS collaborated with NAMD on this one-day program that brought participants from more than 22 states together to discuss opportunities and challenges facing new Medicaid directors and their senior staffs. Selected presentations are below:
Purchasing, Payment and Delivery System Innovations to Drive Value
Panelists highlighted how a state can use its purchasing power, payment models and delivery system redesign efforts to focus on buying value. The panel discussed how states can do this in the current environment, while also planning for future Medicaid expansions and interfaces with the exchanges.

Developing Staff and Engaging Partners in Challenging Budget Times
With wage freezes, furloughs and layoffs being the norm in many states, directors may find it difficult to keep staff motivated and hard-working given the challenges facing the program. Ms. Ingram will present a staff development model that has been useful to the first two classes of Medicaid Leadership Institute Fellows and may help directors get the most from their staff in these complex times.

Understanding the Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC)
Dr. Zawistowich explained MACPAC's roll and its interface with Congress, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and the states. She highlighted key issues in MACPAC's initial report to Congress in March and discussed topics for its impending June report.
